Hello cortisone! Goodbye worries!

I can race! I can race! The ortho said my self diagnosis was correct and I have a bit of runner's knee.  He gave me cortisone shot and told me to go kick ass on my race this weekend! I can't begin to tell you how relieved I am. The realization that I will be running my second 50k in less than five days is also in full swing. Bring on the butterflies! Now time to worry about more pressing matters, like what to pack in my drop bag!

Runless Weekend

I didn't do a damn thing this weekend!  My husband and I went on a weekend getaway to Park City, Utah without the kids (Thanks Grandma!) It was miraculous!  My knee feels very solid today with no pain, although it was bugging me a little on Saturday.  I am feeling like a total sloth. Today I think I'd better do about two hours of cycling to make up for my total and complete lack of movement the past few days.  But it was worth it.  The vacation was way overdue and we had a blast!

I also made an appointment with the orthopedic this afternoon, so cross your fingers!

Daily Mile: Two Gimps on a Walk

Ozzy and I went out for a run for his birthday today.  He's two years old!  Here is how it went down:

0-.50 miles:  Wow!  I feel really great!  Hmm, the dog is limping a little.

.50-.75 miles:  I can't believe how great I feel.  Too bad the dog is limping!

mile .75:  Wait.  My knee hurts.

.75-1.50 miles: Walk.  Try to run.  No.  Knee hurts (but only a little) better walk.

Walk.  Limp goes the dog.  Walk.  Limp. Walk.  Limp.

Not highly encouraging.  Still, better than nothing.  Now, I'm going to go do some yoga and try to relax from my nice stressful run.  Then maybe I'll go buy Ozzy a nice bone.

Overuse Injuries

I really dislike telling non-runners when I have a running injury, because they automatically assume running is bad for me.  Yes, runners often get injured, but as this article points out, runners are often pushing their limits.  I'm much more likely to be injured than someone who is sitting on their rump all day.  Not unlike the hip problems I've had, this sore knee is a result of pushing myself.  The question is, will sixteen days of rest be enough to get over it?  Will I race anyway (probably)?  Will I finish (I hope so)?  Have you had overuse injuries?  How did you get over them?  How long did it take?
